I wonder why they don't seem to have ever become popular in the US. It makes so much more sense than a traditional fireplace.

These kachelöfen sound like esthetic and practical marvels. I’d never heard of them and wish we had them here, though our brick fireplace in L.A. is largely decorative. Your pictures of the charming kachelöfen in Austria make me long to stay in one of these cozy places, and your lovely home belongs in House Beautiful!
