Haarlem is not a big city (170,000 inhabitants), people work in local businesses, at Schiphol airport, or in Amsterdam; nearby are the famous flowerfields (“bollenvelden”) with tulips etc.
That's a good question, Janice. I didn't actually research that. But it probably is tourism. What interested me about that is that the majority of tourists seemed to be Dutch--not foreigners.
Thank you, Lucy. My favorite stall at the market was the woman who sold brushes. Brushes for the kitchen and cleaning, brushes for the body and bath. Pus a few loofahs. Who knew you could make a living doing that? More power to her for thinking outside the box!
There's a gift shop in Sneem that stocks a great range of brushes. Every time I go to Sneem I buy a brush. Last visit a few weeks ago it was a sturdy vegetable brush. Great for the potatoes 😁🥔
Absolutely fascinating! What an incredible city, and your photos are stunning. The buildings, architecture, museums and market are magnificent. I especially love the illustration of how one man decided to use his influence to make society a better place.... So inspiring. I am so glad you got to go on this wonderful trip.
Was für ein spannender Text samt interessanten Bildern, Clarice - herzlichen Dank dafür! Man bekommt richtig Sehnsucht, diese Stadt selbst zu besuchen!
What a fascinating city with an amazing history. What are the major industries in the city now? Tourism?

Thank you for your explanation, Timon. I just now saw it.

I didn't know that! The next time we're in Sneem (we love the seaweed baths there), I will have to look for it.
As you drive in from the Parknasilla Road it is on the left corner of the street facing the green area.
Wow, no wonder this was a recommended stop on a trip to The Netherlands! Looking forward to the next post.
Thank you!

And thank you for the restack.
Always a pleasure.
So interesting, I really didn't do much reading about Haarlem before we went as we were just there briefly, looks like it's worth going back to!
The more I learn, the more interesting it gets!
